Herd Health
Hello,
In regards to herd health we believe our herd to be CAE  based on testing results.
All goats on the property have tested negative or their dam/sire's on the property tested negative. All new goats
purchased are "NOT BRED" until they test negative for CAE.
TESTING INFO ON OUR GOATS POSTED BELOW FOR YOUR VIEWING.
ALL GOATS IN OUR HERD ARE TESTED AS CAE NEGATIVE OR ARE KIDS FROM OUR CAE NEGATIVE GOATS.
GOATS ARE TESTED PRIOR TO ARRIVAL OR QUARENTINED UNTIL TESTED.
We feed quality grass hay, Dumor Goat feed, free choice
Sweetlix Minerals, and free choice sodium bicarbonate.
The goats get their CD&T vaccines yearly, receive bi-annual BO-SE injections and Vitamin B complex, & Vitamin &
& D, & Copper Boluses as needed.
As a note I also keep their hooves well trimmed as it's a pet peeve of mine to see other's goats with badly neglected
hooves.

I think "FULL" disclosure is the ethical thing to do for breeders though many breeders may not.

I once saw the following post made on a list I belong too and found it very insightful. I asked if he'd mind if I
used his statement on my site and was granted permission:

"Some herds like to play the 'sweep it under the carpet' game and test, cull, and never disclose, but eventually an
animal is sold that is tested by another owner and POOF the cat is out of the bag. When I see this kind of
"deception by omission" I tend to make a mental note of those herds and refrain from using their lines at all --
whether I 'personally like' the lines or not -- my belief is that one deception makes it too easy for them to fall into
that pattern and thus wonder what else might they be 'keeping quiet' about. Just how I look at it.

I know many will scream bloody murder at the thought of full disclosure but that's ok too, I'm used to seeing a lot
of scurrying and maneuvering when 'hot topics' get brought to light. Rather amusing, actually, to see what lengths
some will go to over something that is a non-issue if properly handled and disclosed".

I totally agree with this. Goats are often transported places and sold many times in their lives. When you
own animals in numbers you are at times going to have to deal with diseases and such as they tend to go
hand in hand. HOW the disease is dealt with though is the key I think.

For instance in purchasing goats I'd much rather know there was a goat that tested positive once for
something and HOW IT WAS DEALT WITH rather than purchasing from someone who when they find a
positive quietly deals with it in their own way and advertises their herd as always clean. I'd like to be able to
judge for myself if it was dealt with in a way that makes me feel safe purchasing from them. Having
information from herds I buy from can make me more confident and direct me how and what to test for in
my own herd. So that said I intend to do the same and go with full disclosure rather than being hush on my
results.

The  first below test from WADDL are the results on my entire herd (adults and babies) at the time of
testing. I began putting together my herd in May of 2007 and this was my first time testing. It was a great
experience. Being my first herd I am quite proud as I purchased these goats carefully from various breeders
and owners. ALL GOATS WERE NEGATIVE FOR CAE & CL EXCEPT FOR OUR ADULT NUBIAN, NIYA,
WHO TESTED POSITIVE FOR CAE & "NEGATIVE" FOR CL.

Niya was purchased at a year of age and had not yet ever kidded so had never produced milk (the primary
mode of transmission of CAE). She also never kidded here, nor had ever kidded in her life to date, and thus
no possibility of milk transmission on our property. It is also my understanding that "rarely" CAE can be
transmitted via open wound blood to open wound blood. To read further on CAE see:

http://www.goatworld.com/articles/cae/cae.shtml

Due to the positive result though Niya was removed from the herd and property. Her two pasture mates,
Nadia & Devito, both tested negative on all.

SO I AM HAPPY TO SAY I FEEL CONFIDENT OUR CURRENT HERD IS CAE & CL FREE.

You may notice that American Beauty was also tested for Johnes. Beauty has been to MANY herds in her
life and I have heard that one herd once sold a goat that later tested positive for Johnes so that is why she
was tested additionally for Johnes and the result was NEGATIVE. This is also how I will handle such
situations. If I have "any" reason for concern regarding an unusual disease due to a goats history, etc I will
have it tested to be certain and rule out any possibility for concern.

REGARDING NIYA'S RESULTS:
Niya was purchased at a year of age and had
not yet ever kidded so had never produced
milk (the primary mode of transmission of
CAE). She also never kidded here, or at all
for that matter, and thus no possibility of
milk transmission on our property. As soon
as these results were received she was
removed from the property.

NOTE: The goats to the right are
Nubian, Nigerian, and Mini-Nubians
so the Breed section should have
been left blank by the vet. The
names were shortened for
submission by the vet also and I've
clarified the names below on the
list as follows. A "W" for White was
mistakenly placed before the
Bearded Ladies goats as they were
all "white" in color I guess :

OUR VETS
If you are looking to purchase from us or
if we are looking to purchase from you feel
free to contact our vets and ask about us
or our animals. NOTE: Please only inquire
with them if you are very serious about a
purchase or if we are in the process of a
purchase as they are busy and we don't
want non-serious calls badgering them. See
etails under each vet.

NOTE: We love the vets at each of these
clinics and have found them to be really
excellent and great to work with. Each has
an area they are stronger in from our
perspective hence why we use each for
different things and also due to the fact of
their locations as some are further from us
then others.

IN JULY 2010 THE FOLLOWING GOATS WERE TESTED FOR CAE  THROUGH WADDLE &
WERE NEGATIVE. Due to costs we are testing by pens. In this case we tested all of our
boys (who are located in one pen) and any does recently purchased. All other previous
goats on the farm have been tested CAE negative or are kids out of our CAE negative
adults. The following were CAE negative July 2010.
